Is GPT-6 free? What OpenAI says, and our free-account test

From the Hourwiz video “Is GPT-6 free? Five questions. Let's count.” · Checked Oct 13, 2026

Short answer: OpenAI says yes, the Luna version. We didn't take that on trust: we asked one free ChatGPT account five everyday questions and counted how many answers came back as something you can tap.

What OpenAI says

Read it yourself: ChatGPT release notes · GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT · Intelligent UI in ChatGPT

OpenAI's own pages disagree. When we checked on Oct 13, 2026, OpenAI's help article “GPT-6 and other models in ChatGPT” still said “GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for Free and Go users.” The release notes and the Intelligent UI help page say GPT-6 Luna. That mismatch is why we checked a free account ourselves.

Our test: five questions, one free account

Our test. One free ChatGPT account, ChatGPT on the web in Chrome, Oct 13, 2026. A new chat for each question, the prompt pasted exactly, one run each: no retries, no follow-ups, no settings changed. One account and one run, not a benchmark.

There was no model picker on the free account. The only model label we saw was “6 Instant”, in the answer's Try again menu.

Our test, one free account, Oct 13, 2026
QuestionWhat came backInteractive?
Airplane wingPictures: text with web images credited to their sites. Nothing in the answer to tap.No
Bill splitPlain text: a short list.No
Chicago tripInteractive map: we tapped a stop and a place card opened.Yes
Capitals quizInteractive quiz: we tapped Denver and it turned green.Yes
Bike chainInteractive form: “What kind of bike do you have?”Yes

Our test: 3 of 5 came back interactive. “Interactive” means something inside the answer reacted when we tapped it.

Our take: free gets Luna, not Sol, but the new answers are the real upgrade.

The five prompts

Run them on your own account: a new chat for each, pasted exactly as written. Your results may differ while the rollout continues.

1. How does an airplane wing create lift?
2. Split an $84 dinner bill 3 ways with a 20% tip.
3. Plan a 3-day trip to Chicago.
4. Quiz me on the 50 US state capitals.
5. How do I fix a bike chain that fell off?

Too many visuals?

OpenAI's Intelligent UI help page: in Settings → Personalization → Layout and Visuals, choose Simple. It “reduces visual and interactive elements, though some may still appear.” So it turns visuals down, not off. On our free account the setting read “Default”; we didn't change it.
