AI voice clone scams: the family call card

From the Hourwiz video “Don't trust the voice.” · Checked 8 October 2026

Our take: you can't count on the cloning tools to stop a clone, and you can't count on your ears. Verify the call, not the voice.

The family call card

  1. Panic call asking for money? Hang up. Call them back on the number saved in your phone, not the one that called you. Caller ID can be faked: scammers can combine voice clones with spoofing so the call looks like it's from someone you know (Arizona AG). FTC · FBI.
  2. Ask for your family word. A word or phrase only your family knows (FBI · Arizona AG). Our rule: agree it in person, never post or text it, and make the caller say it; don't hint.
  3. Wire, crypto, gift cards? Stop. The FTC lists these payment requests as signs of a scam.

Our workflow. Built from FTC, FBI and Arizona Attorney General guidance; the in-person rule is ours. Not legal or financial advice.

Our check of 5 voice-cloning tools' docs

Our check, docs only, 10 Oct 2026. We read each vendor's own public pages and confirmed each tool is still offered to new customers. We didn't sign up, upload audio or clone anyone, and this doesn't test whether the checks work in practice. Docs change: Speechify switched to spoken consent on 23 Sep 2026. This replaces our 8 Oct check, which counted Resemble AI.

Fish Audio“Ten seconds of clean speech is enough.”“You are responsible for confirming you have the rights, consents…”Self-attest
ElevenLabs Instant Voice CloningAbout 1–2 minutes recommendedOne page: confirm you have the right and consent; another: “a voice verification step”Unclear (pages disagree)

Tally: 3 of 5 make the speaker say a consent line out loud, 1 is self-attest (you confirm you have the rights), 1 is unclear. The shortest sample a self-serve tool states is 10 seconds; Microsoft's 5 seconds is for approved customers only.

Not counted: Resemble AI. It is no longer sold to new customers (Aug 2026): its CEO wrote on 13 Aug 2026, “We're supporting our existing customers but not taking new ones,” and its voice-cloning product page now says “This product is no longer available” (checked 10 Oct 2026).

What about “3 seconds”? That figure comes from a 2023 Microsoft research paper (VALL-E). Microsoft calls its follow-up model “purely a research project” with no product plans.

In March 2025, Consumer Reports found that 4 of 6 cloning products it tested let researchers clone a voice from public audio with just a checkbox.

Disclosure. Hourwiz's narrator is a stock synthetic voice made with Kokoro, an open-source text-to-speech model (built-in voice, not one of the tools above). It isn't a clone of anyone. No vendor paid for or reviewed this page.
